ADAS CALIBRATION
Replacing a windscreen on a vehicle equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is a critical safety procedure.
Because forward-facing cameras are mounted directly to the glass, even a 2mm misalignment during installation can cause safety features like or to malfunction.
General Pre-Installation Workflow
Before starting the physical replacement, technicians must ensure the vehicle is prepared for calibration:
-
Pre-Scan Diagnostics: Perform a full system check to identify existing fault codes and verify ADAS health.
-
Vehicle Preparation: Ensure the car is on a level surface, tyre pressures are correct, and there is no excess load in the vehicle.
-
Fuel/Battery: Ensure petrol/diesel vehicles have a full tank and electric vehicles are fully charged, as weight affects ride height and camera angles.
Calibration Procedures
Depending on the manufacturer, the vehicle will require one of the following methods, or a combination of both.
1. Static Calibration (Indoor/Workshop)
This method is performed in a controlled environment using specialized equipment.
-
Setup: Park the vehicle in a designated area with level flooring and uniform lighting.
-
Target Placement: Position manufacturer-specific target boards at precise heights, angles, and distances from the camera.
-
Alignment: Use laser tools or digital measuring systems to align the target frame perfectly with the vehicle’s centerline.
-
Execution: Connect an OEM-approved scan tool to the vehicle’s OBD-II port. The software will then guide the camera to “read” the targets and save the new reference points.
2. Dynamic Calibration (On-Road)
This method involves “learning” the environment while the vehicle is in motion.
-
Initialization: Use a scan tool to put the vehicle into “calibration mode”.
-
Driving Conditions: Drive the vehicle at manufacturer-specified speeds (typically 40–60 mph) on roads with clear, visible lane markings.
-
Process: The system recalibrates by observing real-world cues like traffic, road signs, and lanes. This typically takes 30–60 minutes.
-
Verification: Calibration is complete once the system reaches 100% or dashboard malfunction lights disappear.
Post-Installation & Handover
-
Post-Scan: Verify all systems are clear of fault codes and functioning as intended.
-
Documentation: Provide the customer with a Calibration Certificate confirming the work was done to OEM standards.
